20th International Conference
on Electronic Publishing
Positioning and Power in Academic Publishing: Players, Agents and Agendas

7–9 June 2016 in Göttingen, Germany
The International Conference on Electronic Publishing (Elpub) reaches its 20th anniversary! Elpub 2016 continues the tradition, and brings together scholars, publishers, lecturers, librarians, developers, entrepreneurs, users and all other stakeholders interested in issues regarding electronic publishing in widely differing contexts.
Elpub 2016 will have a fresh look on the current ecosystem of scholarly publishing including the positioning of stakeholders and distribution of economic, technological and discursive power. Elpub will also open the floor for emerging alternatives in how scholars and citizens interact with scholarly content and what role dissemination and publishing plays in these interactions. Questions to be raised include: What is the core of publishing today? How does agenda setting in emerging frameworks like Open Science function and what is the nature of power of the referring scholarly discourses? How does this relate to the European and world-wide Open Science and Open Innovation agenda of funders and institutions, and how does this look like in publishing practice?
The conference will investigate the position and power of players and agents, - e.g. scholars and their networks, legacy and academia-owned publishers, research institutions and e-infrastructures - as well as their respective agendas. When looking at these interlinked topics, we aim to sharpen the view for current challenges and ways forward to reshape the publishing system. You are most welcome to join us in this exciting discussion!

Preservation Challenges in eScience:
From Process Management Plans via Process Capture to
Validating Process Re-execution

Andreas Rauber
Vienna University of Technology
Vienna, Austria

Abstract

eScience offers huge potential of speeding up scientific discovery, being able to flexibly re-use, combine and build on top of results without geographical or time limitations and across discipline boundaries. Yet, in order to reap the benefits promised by eScience, we must be able to actually perform these activities, i.e. having the data, processing components available for re-deployment. This proves challenging as procedures currently in place in research institutions frequently are not set up to meet these goals.

In this talk, we will review the principles of data management plans, now forming part of all major project funding guidelines, as an accepted and established first step in this direction. We will review their strengths and weaknesses and outline ways to address them. Specifically, we will focus on moving beyond data, addressing the capture and description of entire research processes, ways to document and prepare them for archival. We will review how processes and their context can be described, how specific instances can be captured even if being based upon massive amounts of data, and how these processes can be validated for correctness upon re-execution.

CV

Andreas Rauber is Associate Professor at the Department of Software Technology and Interactive Systems (ifs) at the Vienna University of Technology (TU-Wien). He furthermore is president of AARIT, the Austrian Association for Research in IT and a Key Researcher at Secure Business Austria (SBA-Research). He received his MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology in 1997 and 2000, respectively. In 2001 he joined the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) in Pisa as an ERCIM Research Fellow, followed by an ERCIM Research position at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA), at Rocquencourt, France, in 2002.

Call for Papers

18th International Conference on Electronic Publishing
19-20 June, 2014, Thessaloniki, Greece

Let’s put data to use: digital scholarship for the next generation

The International Conference on Electronic Publishing (Elpub) enters its 18th year. Elpub 2014 will continue the tradition, bringing together researchers, lecturers, librarians, developers, entrepreneurs, users and all other stakeholders interested in issues regarding electronic publishing in widely differing contexts. These include the human, cultural, economic, social, technological, legal, commercial and other relevant aspects that such an exciting theme encompasses.

Elpub 2014 will particularly focus on the openness and use of research data as well as new and innovative publishing paradigms. We welcome presentations and discussions that demonstrate the role of cultural heritage and service organisations in the creation, accessibility, curation and long term preservation of data. We aim to provide a forum for discussing appraisal, citation and licensing of research data. Also, what is new with reviewing, publishing and editorial technology in a data-centric setting?

We invite contributions from members of the communities whose research and experiments are transforming the nature of electronic publishing and scholarly communication.
